Staff Archaeologist

Location: Southern and Central California - open recruitment

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) maintains a list of potential candidates for full-time Staff Archaeologist in all offices. The Staff Archaeologist will work under the direction of senior staff on cultural resource projects. Job duties may include conducting archival research (including records searches at various Information Centers); Native American outreach correspondence and documentation; field survey and site documentation; testing and data recovery excavation; construction monitoring; and assistance with preparation of technical reports and other documents.

Skill Requirements:

  • Archaeology fieldwork, lab processing, and/or or technical analysis;

  • Conducting records searches;

  • Basic technical writing and report preparation;

  • Ability to collect field data using a Trimble Geo X7 or other GPS devices;

  • Ability to work cooperatively with construction contractors, tribal monitors, and other project stakeholders;

  • Basic understanding of CRM laws and regulations; and

  • Strong work ethic and good communication skills.

Education AND Experience:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, historical archaeology, or related field.

Field Technicians

Location: Open recruitment; We currently have opportunities in Lompoc and San Luis Obispo.

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has ongoing openings for Archaeological Field Technicians in our offices throughout California. This work is on-call, as needed, and local candidates are encouraged to apply.

Pay will be appropriate to capabilities and experience, at least $18.64 per hour.  When applicable, expense reimbursement will be provided.

Duties:

Field technicians are responsible for carrying out archaeological excavation, pre-construction field surveys and conducting mitigation monitoring in support of upcoming projects. Duties may also include site testing and evaluation, and data recovery. Local candidates preferred.

Skill Requirements:  

  • Field experience with archaeological survey and/or excavation;

  • Knowledge of and basic operation of GPS technology;

  • Ability to take clear and legible notes as well as strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Physically fit and able to handle strenuous field conditions in sometimes adverse weather. Fieldwork may require hiking on rugged terrain and steep slopes; standing or walking for long periods of time throughout the day; lifting and carrying loads up to 40 pounds; stooping, bending, and kneeling.

  • Valid drivers license / Real ID or passport;

  • Basic background screening for entry onto Department of Defense installations may apply for specific project assignments;

  • Pre-employment drug screening may apply for specific project assignments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field. At least 1 year of experience in California archaeology and completion of an archaeology field school required. Ability to confidently drive in “off-road” conditions is a plus. Applicants must be able to work successfully as a team member. High performers will be considered for additional assignments.

Paleontological Field Technicians

Location: Open recruitment; We currently have opportunities in our Pasadena office.

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has ongoing openings for Paleontological Technicians in our California offices. These positions will report to the Paleontology Program Manager. 

Duties:

Paleontological technicians will be responsible for carrying out pre-construction field surveys and conducting mitigation monitoring during project development. Job duties may also include fossil salvages, matrix washing and picking, and laboratory work (preparation, identification, and cataloging of fossil specimens).  All work will be conducted under the supervision of a qualified Paleontologist. 

Skill Requirements:  

  • Paleontology (fieldwork, museum or research) experience;

  • Ability to read and interpret geologic maps and record geologic and stratigraphic data;

  • Ability to recognize and record fossil resources in the field;

  • Knowledge of and basic operation of GPS technology;

  • Aptitude for taking detailed and accurate field notes;

  • Ability to confidently drive in “off-road” conditions;

  • Physically fit and able to handle strenuous field conditions in sometimes adverse weather. Fieldwork may require hiking on rugged terrain and steep slopes; standing or walking for long periods of time throughout the day; lifting and carrying loads up to 40 pounds; stooping, bending, and kneeling.
