PRINCIPAL ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Principal Architectural Historian. This is a regular, full-time position, and may report to any Æ office. This is a regular, full-time position, and may report to any Æ office. We may also fill this need through contracted labor with work performed remotely (telecommuting). Generally, Principal level staff are part of the Senior Leadership Team and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the business.

Pay Range:

Principal $93,600 - $124,800

Duties:

Reporting to the Managing Principal, the Principal Architectural Historian provides bandwidth to the Historical Program, other Principals, and will guide and review the work of other staff. The Principal Architectural Historian is also responsible for non-billable tasks ensuring the quality of all project work, including historical and technical reporting. Job duties will include the highest level of preparation of proposals; leading marketing and business development; mentorship of staff; and scholarly and technical review of reports.

Skill Requirements:  

  • Complex budget development, personnel management, and scheduling;

  • Complex proposal preparation;

  • Ability to review RFPs and contracts, identify potential pitfalls, and make sound bid/no-bid decisions;

  • Ability to generate work for staff;

  • Excellent technical writing skills with a record of completing technical reports timely;

  • Complex report review and editing skills;

  • A thorough understanding of the CEQA, NEPA, and NHPA Section 106 and 110;

  • Guide staff to research and develop historic contexts and write historic background overviews;

  • Review design plans for consistency with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards and Guidelines;

  • Contribute to HABS/HAER/HALS documentation meeting national or state-level documentation requirements;

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agency representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders with little to no oversight;

  • Strong work ethic, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent communication and writing skills;

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; and

  • Regional expertise in Æ service area, preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in history, art history, architectural history, historic preservation, or related field required.

  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for an Architectural Historian.

  • Minimum of 12 years progressively responsible employment in CRM which includes managing historic built environment projects and preparing proposals and 8 years of experience in supervision and project management.

  • Publication of research at professional organizations, as peer review articles, professional journal, or other recognized media highly desirable.

An employee in this CA-based position can expect a salary of $93,600 - $124,800/year for the Principal Architectural Historian position.
