ASSOCIATE PALeoNTOlogist

Location: Pasadena, CA

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has an immediate opening a full-time Associate Paleontologist which will be assigned to projects throughout the southwest. This position reports to Æ’s Principal Paleontologist as part of our Paleontology Program in our Pasadena, CA office.

Pay Range:

Associate $30.00 - $38.00 hourly

DUTIES:

The Associate Paleontologist will participate in paleontological resource projects under the direction of senior staff and will manage small projects and supervise assigned staff. Job duties may include participating in survey and monitoring projects in support of paleontological resource regulatory compliance; recruiting project-based staff; analyzing fossils and preparing paleontological resource sections of environmental documents; assisting with preparation for and implementation of paleontological monitoring plans; writing technical reports; preparing proposals; and assisting with business development.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Assist with the design and supervision of paleontology fieldwork, lab processing and analysis, and report preparation.

  • Collect and manage field data using an Eos Arrow or other GPS devices.

  • Work cooperatively with clients, agency representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders.

  • Understand paleontological resource management laws and regulations.

  • Demonstrate strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to manage multiple projects and function as an integral team leader and member.

  • Possess regional expertise within Æ service area and strong technical writing skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must meet the Society of Vertebrate Paleontologists (SVP) qualifications for Principal Investigator/Project Paleontologist. Candidates must have:

  • Advanced degree in paleontology, geology, biology, or related field is preferred.

  • A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible employment in paleontological resource management, additional experience may qualify for substitution for advanced degree.

  • Successful completion of geological and/or paleontological field school is desired.

  • Demonstrated technical specialty (e.g., vertebrate, invertebrate, paleobotany) is preferred.

  • Previous field experience in California and qualifications for listing as Field Director on California statewide BLM permits is preferred.

An employee in this CA-based position can expect an hourly rate between $30.00 - $38.00/hour for the Associate Paleontologist position.
